Sri Mookambika Devi Temple – Kollur

At a distance of about 80 km from Udupi is a small quaint town called Kollur which houses the famous Mookambika Devi temple is one of the Seven Mukthi Sthala of Karnataka. Situated at the banks of the perennial river Souparnika, this temple with gold plated crest and copper roofs is hard to miss. Thousands of worshippers throng the place throughout the year to seek blessings of Sri Mookambika Devi.

Goddess Sri Mookambika Devi is worshipped in the form of Jyotir-lingam. According to SkandaPurana, she is the unification of both Shiva and Shakti. She is revered for strength, knowledge, power and courage. She is the manifestation of Parvathi, Saraswathi and Mahalaxmi.

It is said that after long meditation, Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya had a vision of Sri Mookambika. He is said to have installed her Panchaloha image on Shree Chakra at the very place where he meditated. This temple also houses an admirable sculpture of Panchamukha Ganesha.

People attend the Sri Mookambika Temple car festival in great numbers. This festival generally falls in the month of March. Similarly, Dussehra or Navarathri festival is also celebrated in huge grandeur.
