Kodachadri Hills – Kollur

Located in the Shimoga district, Kodachadri Hills in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, is declared as natural heritage site by the Government of Karnataka. Kodachadri hills are covered with dense forests comprising one of the biggest forest zones in Karnataka and a section of this region constitutes the Mookambika Nature Reserve.

The name Kodachadri is derived from the local word “Kodacha” or “Kodachi” meaning hill of Kutaja flowers; and “Adri”, a Sanskrit word. It is also known by the names “Kutachadri” and “Kodashi Parvatha”.

Trek to the peak takes roughly about five hours, but the journey in itself is exhilarating with stunning views along the way. The monsoon renders the trek slippery, yet spirited trekkers conquer the peak! The sunrise and sunset from the peak is regarded to be one of the most resplendent ones. On the western part, the hill descends steeply for nearly 1220 meters before joining the forest of Udupi district. This forest is thick and finds an abundance of biodiversity.

The prime attraction of Kodachadri is “Sarvajna Peetha” which is on the hilltop. It is a small temple built with stone, and is dedicated to Adi Shankara.

Kodachadri hills acts as a stunning backdrop to the famous Mookambika Temple at Kollur. Kollur is the perfect base to explore the Kodachadri hills. The Mookambika Nature Camp is situated 4 kms to the south of Kollur. The Linganmakki dam which is within close proximity of Kodachadri, is also a must see for visitors.
